Shades of Nature is a small business that produces and sells hand crafted naturally dyed fiber products and art. In 2006 I moved the business from the woodland of northern New Jersey to a seven acre farmette in central Pennsylvania. I am now able to raise my own fiber animals, currently alpaca and angora rabbits, and increase the size of my organic flower gardens.
I create unique natural dyed handspun wool yarns and also naturally dye cotton, silk, linen and hemp. Flowers, leaves, mushrooms, wood, lichens, nuts, seeds, berries, roots and sometimes bugs are either cooked or fermented to extract the colour. The fibers and fabrics are then woven, felted, knitted and stitched to make hand bags, clothing, scarves, pillows, runners and rugs.
The vistas of Pennsylvania provide endless inspiration for new paintings. Several years ago my textile background merged with my artwork and I began to weave paintings. Each work of art begins with at least two paintings. I render separate colour interpretations of the same subject such as warm and cool, or light and dark. Then the paintings are sliced into undulating warp and weft strips. These paper components are woven together into one unit. Sometimes more imagery is painted or collaged on the woven surface.
Increasingly I find myself combining fiber and art. Some recent paintings utilize handspun yarn, handmade paper, and even natural dyed felt. Several woven paintings I’ve reproduced on canvas and used as the basis for ‘Art Totes’.
Locally my paintings are available at
